How can the world be fixed?
God’s answer to the world’s issues
The world has never been devoid of problems, and in recent times due to social media, we have a heightened awareness of all that is going wrong.
I mean there’s a whole war going on in Ukraine, and there was a massacre of innocent civilians in the city of Bucha. And in Nigeria, there was an attack just last week on a train leading to the deaths of innocent people. And they’re many more examples like this around the world.
The point I’m trying to make is, the world is messed up, people are messed up. But you already knew that. The question is why? What is God doing about all of this? I mean he’s supposed to care for us after all.
Conventional wisdom tells us the answer to this is simple, people should simply stop doing bad things. It’s all the evil we did that got us here in the first place, so why don’t we just stop? If we all started doing good the world would be better, and we don’t need God for that.
But that “solution” has never worked. People simply cannot do good, even when they want to, and a lot of people don’t even want to. And even the best of us make mistakes and have shortcomings. And if you’ve ever tried to be a good person before, you know it’s not the easiest thing in the world, like C.S Lewis said:
“No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good.”
Since we can’t trust people to just do what is right, we’ve devised a criminal justice system to penalize certain types of bad behaviors. But that hasn’t stopped people from committing crimes, and even at its best, it doesn’t make us better. The law may stop you from committing murder, or from stealing, but it cannot make you a better person. It cannot make you kind, or more loving.
Clearly, the problem goes to the root of our natures, so whatever the solution would be has to deal with things from the root. And that’s where the gospel comes in. The gospel is God’s answer to this problem, the gospel goes to the root of the issue, our natures, and changes things from there.
Beyond telling us to simply “stop doing bad things” the gospel actually helps us live better lives. By believing that Jesus took our sins on Himself on the cross, and was raised to life on the third day to put us in right standing with God. As simple as that is, it has the power to change everything.
The gospel is a loving God’s answer to our problems, all we have to do now is listen to him.
